As temperatures begin to rise with the approaching spring and summer months, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses (HRI).

Why is it important to stay hydrated?

Millions of U.S. workers are exposed to heat in their workplace. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable, every year, thousands become sick from heat-related illnesses and some cases are fatal.

What is Heat Related Illness?

Heat-Related illness occurs when your body starts to lose the ability to regulate its core temperature. Heat-Related illness includes (but is not limited to):

  • Heat Rash
  • Heat Cramps
  • Heat Stress
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat Stroke

How do you know if you are suffering from Heat-Related Illness?

  • Headache and confusion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Weakness and Dizziness
  • Rapid Pulse
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Cold and clammy skin
  • Slurred speech

Steps to Prevent Heat-Related Illness

Avoid-Heat-Stress
  • Drink water and electrolyte solutions before, during and after every shift. It is highly recommended when working in high heat for a prolonged period to drink 1 cup of water every 15 minutes.
  • Regularly monitor for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness before and during shift.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine (tea, coffee, soda, etc.) and alcohol.
  • Wear high SPF sunscreen
